As someone who used to live in East Malaysia, moving to the Big City, also known as KL, was a big step for me. Luckily my extended family lived here, so I didn't feel alone.
But not everyone has this privilege. Recent research has shown that loneliness is twice as likely to cause depression or anxiety due to loneliness, and that living alone can make these symptoms worse.
One way to combat loneliness is coliving, a housing solution where people with a similar attitude live together.
The coliving concept is not exactly new in Malaysia. Co-Living @ Damai Residence is one of the first in the scene and has been in operation for more than a year.
The last time we spoke to the team was about a year ago, and this time we caught up with them to see what improvements they had made to their coliving model. We have also received some first-hand reviews from some of their tenants.
Always more than you paid for
The rental at Co-Living @ Damai Residence starts from RM1,000, In the so-called one-bill-pays-all concept, electricity bills such as WiFi, water and electricity are included in the rent.
This means you don't have to worry about missing a payment on bills and turning off your electricity while cooking dinner.
But that's not all. Here you also get additional benefits such as a coworking space and endless opportunities to participate in their community activities.
Of course, this place is not only open to millennials, but to anyone who is looking for flexible accommodation or wants to make new friends who share a similar attitude.

So what is flexible about Co-Living @ Damai Residence?
They have flexible rental Contracts that start from 3 months, and this means that you no longer have to be bound by one-year contracts.
Take it from one of the tenants, Ya’Tze, who lives there 6+ months:
The flexibility with the contract was a big plus for me, and the all-inclusive bills meant I didn't have to worry about missing payments.

In addition to the work area mentioned above, on the 19th floor (the Co-Coon Hub) you will find a huge communal lounge with a TV and a pool table, as well as an entertainment zone with a game console and a large-screen projector. Sometimes the tenants even watch a film together.
But that's not all.
On the roof, they have other amenities like a wooden deck for a relaxing yoga session and grills for some simple and cozy parties in front of the breathtaking view of KLCC.
The coliving area has also recently added a fitness area and equipped it with new exercise equipment.

Overcome social problems
Co-Living @ Damai Residence is not only an affordable place to live, it can also serve as a platform sociability easy among residents of different origins and nationalities.
Because we are honest, it is quite difficult to make friends with people of different nationalities if you are not actively looking for them.
Here you just have to go to the Co-Coon Hub and you will find other tenants just relaxing, chatting or playing a competitive pool game.

Julien, one of the tenants we interviewed, said they have a group chat to organize their own meetings like badminton or swimming.
This is the benefit of living in a living space, since a normal apartment usually doesn't offer the opportunity to be so sociable unless you invite your friends over.
Most of the tenants we spoke to emphasized the sociable culture that is rooted in this colonial space.
As an introvert, I believe that a group of sociable roommates will enable me to get to know them better and, in return, be a more sociable person.

The story so far … A year later
The team said that the rental quota exceeded original expectations, but assured that much remains to be done to further improve the visibility of the coliving concept.
However, they are not the only ones on the scene as competitors emerge.
By offering something different from the others, the team could always be one step ahead of the curve.
The Co-Living @ Damai Residence would like to be distinguished by a local management team that lives in the building.
This means that you don't have to worry about calling a mechanic if something goes wrong by only discussing the problem with the team.
In addition to solving problems, they plan and organize monthly activities with events such as yoga classes, hiking, and even Christmas or New Year celebrations for tenants.
In order to take care of the tenants and make their stay here unforgettable, the team said that they have to constantly improve by getting to know different nationalities and cultures around the world.

Looking to the future, the team hopes to strengthen the brand name worldwide while looking for possible expansion in key urban areas.
I think their rental is quite affordable considering that you are renting a room in the heart of KL with easy access to public transportation and shopping centers.
You could also find lifelong friends like some of the tenants here.
“Life in a coliving space differs from renting an apartment. Coliving is not only a living space, but also a network platform for like-minded people who promote a healthy community. "
