Chancellor Angela Merkel has refused to accept U.S. President Donald Trump's invitation to attend a planned Group of Seven (G7) summit in the U.S., Politico reported on Friday.
"The Chancellor thanks President Trump for his invitation to the G7 summit in Washington at the end of June. In view of the general pandemic situation, she still cannot consent to her personal participation in a trip to Washington to this day," said the report by German government spokesman Steffen Seibert.
"It will of course continue to monitor the development of the pandemic."
Trump believes that "there is no better example of a reopening" than holding a G7 summit in the United States in late June, the White House said on Tuesday.
