Yesterday, Apple released iOS 14.2.1 to fix bugs users have encountered on new iPhones since iOS 14.2 launched on November 5th. Unlike many other iOS versions, this version was not accompanied by updates for any of the company's other operating systems.
The update fixes a bug that resulted in an unresponsive lock screen, specifically on the iPhone 12 mini, and fixes an issue that prevented MMS messages from arriving. 14.2.1 also fixes a problem with the sound quality on connected hearing aids.
Here are Apple's release notes for iOS 14.2.1:
iOS 14.2.1 fixes the following issues for your iPhone:
- Some MMS messages may not be received
- Designed for iPhone hearing aids, listening to audio from iPhone may experience sound quality issues
- The lock screen may stop responding on iPhone 12 mini
The previous update, iOS 14.2, was a bit bigger. More than 100 new emoji have been added, Shazam has been integrated into the control center and, among other things, new audio and AirPlay functions have been introduced. This update was also accompanied by updates for watchOS, tvOS, and others.
Typically, updates with two decimal places are minor bug fixes, updates with only one decimal point are minor feature updates, and updates with only one whole number (like iOS 14) are major annual releases.
iOS 14.2.1 should be available to all users on supported devices (anyone named iPhone 12) right now.
