WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Joe Biden's administration stands ready within days to release the actions it believes are needed to combat climate change, White House national climate adviser Gina McCarthy said on Saturday.
"We've already sent signals for the things we don't like that we're going to roll back, but this week you'll see how we advance the vision of the future," McCarthy told a virtual meeting of the US Mayors' Conference.
McCarthy did not specify what would be released, but a memo seen by Reuters on Thursday indicated that as early as Jan. 27, Biden will unveil a second round of executive orders containing an "omnibus" command to combat climate change domestically and to increase the problem included a national security priority.
Democrat Biden has already issued executive ordinances on climate issues, including the cancellation of the Keystone XL pipeline and re-entry into the 2015 Paris Agreement. Both steps reversed former President Donald Trump's climate policy.
John Kerry, a former US Secretary of State who is Biden's special envoy on climate, told the mayors' meeting that tackling climate change does not mean deteriorating lifestyle; B. drive less or eat no meat.
But the Biden administration, mayors, and other local leaders must convince Americans that mitigating climate change "can be the greatest economic transformation in global history," Kerry said.
