Blurb from the author: You know the whole "glow-up" that people talk about on social media? I think I peaked when I finally learned makeup skills, but one thing I've never really bothered with is my hair. I'm still a total amateur in terms of hair, and I just don't understand why I should be trying hard (a simple ponytail is my go-to).
Kim is just the opposite
from me. For her, a great day means that she is ready to conquer the world, and she
would like to share this feeling with other women in Malaysia.
Everything started when
She learned about Drybar, a California-based chain of salons that exclusively
offers a hair styling service called a blowout while you hear it
Fascinated by the concept
She flew to London and met three Blowdry bar owners to confirm and understand the idea
why it worked in the UK and whether it could work in Asia.
Then she realized that
There were many problems customers faced when visiting regular hair salons.
Some of them are:
- inconsistent service,
- short-lived blowouts,
- be pressured to pay for additional services
- a limited selection of blowout styles,
- a charge is required for a better shampoo,
- and lack of inclusiveness (the Chinese go to Chinese salons and also for Malaysians and Indians).
With the gap she had identified in the market, Kim decided to fix it by launching her own blowdry bar called COCOdry with her co-founder Shan.

Angel investors helped
Make your dream come true and COCOdry started operating in 2019.

But I was curious
about the Malaysian demand for Blowdry services. With such a specific one
and for many of us a relatively new concept, there is enough interest to keep it going
The COCOdry business?
asked exactly this question when she turned to them.
"My answer has always been the same: how often can a woman with long hair have her hair cut or dyed? Twice or three times a year? And how often does a woman wash her hair in the same period? “She considered.
"Why not one
Room where you can drop by for a hair wash as often as you like? Played
on the frequency game. "

Then I thought, couldn’t we wash our hair ourselves and do a simple blow-dry with our hair dryer?
“Yes, you can argue that we can always do it ourselves. However, the same applies to cooking and eating (the Malaysians spend 31.2% of their disposable income on eating out) and driving in our own cars (but Grab handles over 6 million trips a day), ”countered Kim .
“So we believe that there is
A value proposition here with the service we offer. How Malaysia is progressing
We believe that consumers in a high-income nation will start prioritizing experiences.
Convenience and comfort. "
So Kim and Shan started
the first COCOdry store in Bangsar for three types of customers:
- working women who climb the career ladder,
- Lifestyle seekers with events or dinners,
- and people who believe in the COCOdry values of promoting women, community building and sustainability.
"We believe more
mature and wealthy neighborhood that is more exposed to that
The concept of the Blowdry bars will be easier to penetrate and make us stronger
Foot, ”said Kim.
There is more to it than that
As good hair
Despite the location
However, COCOdry endeavors to keep prices reasonable.
According to Kim
Neighborhood salons usually charge RM20-RM50 with add-ons for curls or better
Shampoo, while high-end salons charge RM50-RM100 at no additional cost.
“In COCOdry we have
We chose the sweet spot approach and rated our services for our RM60
Top 5 styles that contain the types of shampoos that are suitable for your scalp and
Hair condition. It is a value based pricing that has no hole in yours

Kim spoils Malaysian women and gives them good hair. She also sees what COCOdry is
do as part of something bigger.
"I wanted COCOdry to do it
Inspire and empower women by instilling positivity and self-confidence to keep up
Leave your comfort zone and be brave enough to pursue your dreams, ”she said
These two values were
Which led Kim to start a company at the age of 26 without much experience and capital
As for the future, Kim
definitely has plans to open more COCOdry stores in Klang Valley and others
Peninsula states, however, explained that it was important that they get it
Basics of business immediately before considering other sources of income and
"Apart from that, we have big plans and have written down some of the initiatives we will be considering for the next 24 months," she said.
These initiatives include
Organize additional events to bring women together to share and expand their travels
their product range includes a range of new hair and scalp treatments and
additional hair extensions, seasonal and occasion styles, outlet
Expansion and even COCOdry's own hair products.

I was actually given
the opportunity to have my first blowdry experience at COCOdry, so I went
Bangsar in one weekend.
I didn't expect much because I only had mediocre salon visits. Upon entering, however, I was greeted with a fairly full house, the air filled with the sound of hair dryers blowing with full force.
Introduction to all hair options that I could choose from
In short, here is what I do
very appreciated about the place:
- the modern and inviting (and insta-friendly) design,
- how open the employees to a real,
interesting conversation with you,
- the reasonable and affordable prices for that
You get service quality.
Since I'm not a hair lover
I went for a relaxing wash and a simple curly hair dryer, and I got what I asked for
to the. This, along with the points above, made the experience memorable enough
one for me.
Throughout my hour I saw a number of walk-ins there, even though COCOdry tries to operate on an appointment basis.
This surprised me when I had my doubts about the demand for Blowdry services in Malaysia. In addition, these women who visited COCOdry were different in age and ethnicity.
Would I go back?
I would actually do it, but only if I had a really chic event to go to.
Bottom line: While my experience at COCOdry hasn't changed my outlook on my hair, it has definitely given me insight into why women can find an easy 45-minute experience that empowers and rewards them. It is definitely what you have to experience to believe it.
