A lawsuit has been launched in Switzerland against British Prince Andrew and his ex-wife Sarah, a newspaper reported on Thursday for money they allegedly still owe for a luxury chalet.
Queen Elizabeth II's second son. And Sarah, who remained close to each other despite their divorce in 1996, bought the luxurious holiday home in the Verbier ski area in southwestern Switzerland in 2014 for CHF 22 million (USD 22.5 million, EUR 21 million).
The wooden chalet has seven bedrooms, an indoor pool and a sauna, the newspaper Le Temps reported.
However, the Duke and Duchess of York did not meet the December 31, 2019 deadline for repayment of part of that amount, Le Temps said.
At the end of last year, the purchase certificates of the French-language daily newspaper had to pay six million francs – now eight million francs with interest.
Four months later, the Etude du Ritz law firm was instructed by the seller to initiate legal proceedings with the local prosecutor, Le Temps reported.
There was no immediate comment from Etude de Ritz when AFP contacted them.
Le Temps quoted a spokeswoman for the Yorks as saying, "There is a dispute between the two parties on this matter," adding that the contractual details "are subject to a confidentiality agreement".
A spokeswoman for Buckingham Palace told AFP: "This is not something we would comment on."
The lawsuit adds to 60-year-old Andrew's concerns.
The prince, who is on the eighth throne, resigned from all royal duties in November after publicly crying out about his friendship with the late US sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
"I continue to unequivocally regret my rash connection with Jeffrey Epstein," he said in a statement.
Andrew emphatically denies any wrongdoing.
The Duke was a naval helicopter pilot who became active in the Falklands War between Britain and Argentina in 1982. After his military career, he spent a decade as Britain's international trade ambassador until 2011.
Andrew and Sarah married in 1986, separated in 1992 and divorced four years later.
However, they stayed nearby and often lived in the same house where they raised their daughters, the princesses Beatrice and Eugenie.
In April, 60-year-old Sarah posted pictures of her and Andrew on Instagram packing cupcakes for a local hospice. It has been a rare look at the prince since he resigned from his royal duties in November.
