Canadian health authorities have warned against using the chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine malaria drugs to treat coronavirus infections or to prevent new infections.
"Chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine can have serious side effects. These drugs should only be used under the supervision of a doctor," said Canada's health agency in a statement released on its website on Saturday.
"Health Canada fears that some people will buy and use chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine directly to prevent or treat COVID-19," it said, and noted that they could cause "serious cardiac arrhythmias."
The European Medicines Agency issued a similar warning on Thursday on medicines whose promise of coronavirus treatment has been advertised by US President Donald Trump.
