WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will announce a revised mask policy for fully vaccinated Americans on Tuesday amid rising COVID-19 cases and the more transmissible Delta variant.
Officials told Reuters that the CDC will, in at least some cases, recommend fully vaccinated Americans to wear masks indoors, but the details are not clear.
The CDC and the White House declined to comment. The CDC said it was planning a 3 p.m. (1900 GMT) COVID-19 update media briefing.
In May, the CDC advised that fully vaccinated people do not need to wear masks outdoors and can avoid wearing them indoors in most locations.
The CDC also said in May that fully vaccinated people would not have to physically distance themselves in most locations.
CDC director Rochelle Walensky said in May the new guidelines are based on a sharp reduction in cases, the expansion of vaccines to younger people and the effectiveness of the vaccine against coronavirus variants.
The CDC said in May it is still recommending vaccinated people wear masks on planes and trains, as well as in airports, transportation hubs, public transit, and places like hospitals and doctor's offices.
Leading infectious disease official Anthony Fauci said on CNN Sunday that health officials are considering revising mask guidelines for vaccinated Americans, saying it was "in active consideration."
