ZCOVA founders Low Ziwei and Low Ziyin started out with a laser focus on disruptions in the diamond industry. They introduced innovative details like 360 ° diamond viewing videos, personalized virtual consultations, virtual try-ons with augmented reality and even double diamond certification.
The end goal has always been to provide the transparency and reliability that enable their customers to make informed purchase decisions and have a positive buying experience.
In doing so, they found that their customers regularly expressed dissatisfaction with another industry: the purchase of precious stones. The problems? Lack of choices, designs, authentication and education.
All of this sounded very familiar to ZCOVA – in fact, these were some of the problems they worked on in the diamond industry.
They saw their part in the success. Over the years the team has told us that they have helped their customers save an estimated 10 million RM when shopping for diamonds.
This was achieved using ZCOVA technology, which allows customers to skip unnecessary additional fees and search diamonds online without being swayed by the opinions of sellers. You are now applying the same principles and expertise to gemstones.
A market ripe for disruption
The ZCOVA team describes the gem market as "fragmented". Because of this, the technology required to categorize gemstones was not available, even though there was a demand for it.
Thanks to the introduction of this technology, ZCOVA was able to create its own virtual gemstone inventory in which users can browse a selection of 100,000 certified gemstones from around the world. 100,000 gemstones is a lot so ZCOVA has broken the categories down into different types, shapes, colors, carats, clarity, origins and more.
If you've seen ZCOVA's diamond lists, this format may sound familiar.
The listings come with 10x enlarged 360 ° videos and while you take a closer look at the gemstones you can easily compare the prices.
When you look at an emerald in a magnified 360 ° view, you can see its luster and see the flaws and inclusions that you normally cannot see clearly with the naked eye. This way you can be absolutely sure of what you are buying.
Every gemstone sold in ZCOVA is also certified according to ICL certificates.
The more you know: In contrast to diamonds, which have a generally recognized rating system via GIA, this is currently lacking in colored gemstones. Instead, the International Colored Gemstone Laboratory (ICL) has set up its own rating system.
For the gem market, however, ZCOVA recommends having the gemstones certified in more than one laboratory so that customers can be sure know the origin and specification of their gemstone.
They offer an additional service for further certification of gemstones in two separate laboratories, LOTUS and GRS, if customers want to further evaluate their gemstone.

ZCOVA attaches great importance to the certification of the origin of gemstones, as each origin can have slight differences in hue and saturation that ultimately affect their value.
It is important for them that customers are aware of such differences so that they can make the best decisions when choosing a gemstone.
After choosing a gemstone, customers will have access to additional services from ZCOVA, including impartial advice from gemologists, in-house jewelry designers, 3D printing technology and skilled craftsmanship.
3D printing technology has proven to be a key differentiator in ZCOVA's diamond sales in Malaysia and Singapore.
This enabled the team to accurately print the designs customers wanted for them to try on and view in person. That way, customers can see how big the diamond looks on their fingers, get the right size, and actually see their designs before confirming.

“Customers have told us that this is much better than going into a store, as the last ring can usually only be seen after 2 months and it is already set in gold. At ZCOVA, it takes 3-7 days to render the design once a customer requests a 3D print and another 2 days for the print to be done, ”the team said.
The right technology at the right time
"Consumers can now take advantage of the diversity and transparency that has never been achieved in Asia," the team announced in a press release on the introduction of the virtual gem inventory.
These are bold words, but if their efforts to date in the diamond industry are the benchmark, ZCOVA seems to have the power to hold on to their goal and take the gem industry to a whole new level here.
With the ongoing pandemic limiting visits to physical stores, a large, easy-to-search virtual collection of gemstones could be just what consumers are looking for. ZCOVA has already seen increased numbers on their diamond front. "In the past 9 months, our number of customers has more than doubled despite the pandemic," they said.
It's not hard to imagine how their gem sales could see a similar trend.
