The coronavirus pandemic killed more than 5,000 people late Wednesday, according to an ongoing list from Johns Hopkins University.
On Thursday around 0235 GMT, 5,116 people had died, as the balance showed. On the same day, the United States set a daily record of 884 people killed within 24 hours.
The death toll in the United States is lower than in Italy and Spain, but is above 3,316 in China, where the pandemic first occurred in December.
Johns Hopkins said the U.S. is the world leader in new coronavirus cases with 215,417 cases.
President Donald Trump, who had previously downplayed the effects of the pandemic on the United States, said on Wednesday: "We will have a few weeks, starting now, but especially in a few days that will be terrible." ""
Last Sunday, senior US scientist Anthony Fauci made a cautious prediction that the novel corona virus could take 100,000 to 200,000 lives in the country.
