More than two million cases of the new corona virus have been officially registered worldwide, half of them in Europe. This emerges from a balance sheet prepared by AFP on Wednesday at 1000 GMT, which is based on official sources.
At least 2,000,576 infections, including 126,871 deaths, have been registered. Europe is the most affected continent with 1,010,858 cases and 85,271 deaths. In the United States, where the virus spreads fastest, 609,240 cases and 26,033 deaths were registered.
The numbers using data collected by AFP from national authorities and information from the World Health Organization (WHO) are likely to reflect only a fraction of the actual number of infections. Many countries only test the most serious cases.
