PRAGUE (Reuters) – The Czech Republic recorded 168 new cases of coronavirus on Friday. This is the highest daily increase in cases since the beginning of April, when the country is just beginning the two-month summer vacation season.
It was also the fourth day of the last 10 days with a daily increase of more than 100. Last week, the eastern region of Karvina was by far the most affected by the increase in cases, according to the Ministry of Health website.
Friday was the last day of school for most children and schoolchildren, and their families were preparing for the holidays. Many Czechs will spend their vacation in the country instead of going abroad because of concerns about the virus and travel restrictions.
The government has gradually lifted most of the business restrictions, apart from wearing masks indoors and restrictions on the opening hours of pubs and major cultural events. It has announced that it will focus on local quarantines and traceability and testing measures rather than national locks in the future.
Last Monday, public gatherings of up to 1,000 people were allowed by 500 people. Trade fairs were given the green light and pools, zoos, museums and castles were allowed to work normally again without the number of visitors being more limited.
By Saturday morning, the country with 10.7 million inhabitants had reported a total of 11,038 coronavirus cases with 349 deaths.
