Given its name, you might expect "Devs" – which was released earlier this month on the new FX on Hulu – to be a "Silicon Valley" style sitcom about the tech industry. And there are indeed some delightful moments when the writer and director of Ex Machina, Alex Garland, makes fun of San Francisco and technology culture.
But the prevailing mood is mysterious and terrible. The show mostly takes place on a fictional quantum computer called Amaya, led by its brooding CEO Forest (played by Nick Offerman), who employs Lily (Sonoya Mizuno) and her friend Sergei (Karl Glusman). Amaya also houses a department called Devs – a group that is so mysterious that most employees don't even know what the team is working on.
