President Donald Trump was furious on Monday with negative media coverage of his golf game on Memorial Day weekend as the number of US coronavirus pandemic deaths neared 100,000.
"The fake and totally corrupt news makes it sound like a mortal sin!" The golf-loving president said on Twitter that the game was in his own place in Virginia for the first time since early March.
The timing of his outing when the nation was approaching a milestone in the pandemic deaths triggered widespread criticism in the media. Commentators remembered Trump's own attacks on his predecessor Barack Obama for playing the game during the 2014 Ebola outbreak.
"There are times to play and times when you can't play. It sends the wrong signal," Trump said at the time.
"You know, when you're president, you kind of say," I'll give it up for a few years and really focus on the job, "he said in 2014.
After Trump was raked over the coal at the weekend, he berated the media as "sick with hatred and dishonesty".
"I knew that would happen!" he said. "What they don't say is that it was my first golf game in almost three months, and if I waited three years, they would do their usual" hit "pieces anyway."
The Republican leader continued that Obama flew to his home state of Hawaii in 2014, shortly after publicly denouncing the decapitation of the American hostage James Foley by militants from the Islamic state.
Obama apologized for the poorly timed visit and acknowledged the severity of the President's behavior at such moments.
Trump received unexpected support from one-time Obama advisor David Axelrod.
"I don't defend this @POTUS often, but I don't treat it to golf," said Axelrod, now a political commentator, on Twitter.
"It also gives the rest of us a break from these crazy tweets! Yes, it is hypocritical for @realDonaldTrump to have attacked @BarackObama to get rid of presidential pressure on the golf course when Trump has done many more rounds. " he said.
"It's hypocritical to attack Trump now if you defended Obama back then."
