At least eight people were killed in two shootings late Wednesday near the German city of Frankfurt, with an unknown number of attackers still at large, the police said.
The shootings were directed against shisha bars in Hanau, about 20 kilometers from Frankfurt, according to local media, and the police launched a huge search in the city with around 90,000 inhabitants.
The first attack occurred at around 10 p.m. (2100 GMT) in a bar in the city center, police and reports said. Witnesses said they heard a dozen shots, local media said.
The attacker or the attackers then fled the scene by car, according to the police. Then there was a second shoot.
According to local media reports, three people were killed in front of the first bar and five in front of the second.
Germany has been hit by several extremist attacks in recent years, one of which killed 12 people in the heart of Berlin in December 2016.
