Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Inc, and Canadian singer Grimes, who announced the birth of their first child together on Tuesday, plan to join a growing number of families choosing a gender-neutral parenting style.
The approach has become increasingly popular as more and more parents are rejecting gender stereotypes – for example, dressing girls in pink and boys in blue instead of giving children the opportunity to make such decisions for themselves.
"I don't want to treat them gender-specifically if they don't feel that way in their lives," said 32-year-old Grimes, whose real name is Claire Boucher, told fans in February on a YouTube live stream while she was talking about her pregnancy discussed.
At the time, she refused to reveal the baby's gender, but 48-year-old Musk said on Twitter that they had a boy.
Musk published two pictures of the newborn, whom they called X Æ A-12, and said that mother and baby were "all good".
Other famous parents who have spoken about their plans to raise their children in a gender-neutral environment include singer Paloma Faith and Marvel actress Zoe Saldana.
The trend has prompted toy and clothing brands to develop new sexless products.
Barbie maker Mattel launched gender-neutral dolls last year, and clothing brands such as Zara and the smaller clothing line Gypsy Sport have started to produce sexless clothing collections.
