According to an AFP list of official figures, more than a quarter of a million people worldwide have died from the novel corona virus, over 85 percent of them in Europe and the United States.
On Monday at 10:30 p.m. GMT, the United States had 68,689 virus deaths, most in a single country, while Europe was the hardest-hit continent with 145,023 confirmed deaths.
Since it appeared in China in December, COVID-19 has infected more than 3.5 million people and destroyed the global economy.
The number of virus deaths in the United States was followed by those in Italy (29,079), Great Britain (28,734), Spain (25,428) and France (25,201).
More than 1.5 million coronavirus infections have been confirmed in Europe, but only the most serious cases are tested in many countries.
It is generally believed that the figures collected by AFP from national authorities and information from the World Health Organization (WHO) reflect only a fraction of the actual number of infections.
