(Reuters) – Federal prosecutor determined Boeing Co. (N 🙂 Check to see if the U.S. aircraft manufacturer knowingly misled the Federal Aviation Administration when it applied for approval for its 737 MAX jet, the New York Times reported at https://www.nytimes.com/2020/ 02/21 / business / boeing-737-max-investigation.html citing two people familiar with the matter.
Boeing said it was cooperating with the US Department of Justice investigation.
Prosecutors have been interviewing several Boeing employees over the past few months, focusing on whether Mark Forkner, a top pilot of the company, has deliberately lied to the regulator about the nature of the new flight control software in the jet.
A Forkner lawyer did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment.
Forkner said in a series of internal messages from 2016 published in October that he might have accidentally misled regulators.
The reports appeared to have been the first publicly known observation that the MCAS anti-stall system behaved erratically during pre-flight tests.
Forkner's comments, who have since left Boeing, have been cited by U.S. lawmakers at hearings in Washington as evidence that Boeing knew problems with flight control software long before two crashes of its 737 MAX aircraft killed 346 people in October 2018 and March 2019 ,
The FAA did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comments.
The aircraft manufacturer's shares closed 1.8% at $ 330.38.
