Florida has broken its state's record for new cases of COVID-19 every day over the past week. With this development, Florida, which has reported more than 80,000 cases in total, is on a list of nine countries in which the number of coronavirus cases is increasing significantly. According to a Fortune analysis of the New York Times data, an average of 726 new cases per day were reported in Florida over the seven-day period ending June 1. This corresponds to an average of 1,775 new cases per day in the seven-day period that ended yesterday, June 15.)
While some Florida officials have associated the increase with higher rates of coronavirus testing, data show that the rate of positive COVID-19 testing is increasing in Florida. The state's reporting and decision-making about the reopening has been the subject of some controversy.
Arizona and Texas were also among the states with a significant increase in new cases over the past seven days compared to two weeks earlier. On average, Arizona has had 811 more new cases per day in the last seven days than in the seven-day period ending on June 1st.
The states that were hit hard in the early stages of the pandemic and are still in the early stages of reopening continued to decline in new cases. The number of new cases reported per day in Massachusetts has dropped by an average of 781 compared to two weeks ago. Seven other states, including Illinois and Virginia, saw significant drops in new cases between the two periods.
Overall, the number of new cases had declined rather than increased in slightly more countries, but the total number of new cases per day across the country was somewhat higher on average in the week of June 15 (21,821) than two weeks ago (21,510).
