Indian-American Sri Preston Kulkarni has won an easy win in the Democratic area code for the 22nd Congress district of Texas and will face the Republican candidate in the November election.
40-year-old Kulkarni, a former diplomat who served in Iraq, Russia, Israel and Taiwan, defeated Pearland's former city council member Derrick Reed and lawyer Nyanza Davis Moore in Tuesday's party elections, The Hill reported.
While Mr. Kulkarni received 53.1 percent of the votes cast, Reed received 24.7 percent and Moore 14.5 percent.
Shortly after his victory, Preston Kulkarni thanked the voters and tweeted: "Without your help and support we would not have come here."
Previously, he ran against retired Republican Pete Olson (R-Texas) and came within 5 points of defeating the incumbent in the interim in 2018. He would take on the Republican runner-up winner on May 26th.
Mr. Kulkarni is the son of an Indian writer and academic who immigrated to America in 1969 and a white mother.
