After the explosion in Beirut, Lebanon, George and Amal Clooney donated three Lebanese charities to support relief efforts. "We are both deeply concerned about the people of Beirut and the devastation they have experienced over the past few days," said George and Amal People in a joint statement on Thursday. "Three nonprofits we have found are providing significant local help: the Lebanese Red Cross, Impact Lebanon and Baytna Baytak. We will donate $ 100,000 to these charities and hope that others will help in every way possible."
The tragedy hits Amal, a human rights lawyer born in Beirut, near her home. Her family moved from Lebanon to England during the Lebanese Civil War when she was only 2 years old.
Hundreds of people were killed and thousands injured in the Beirut explosion on August 4. After the explosion, more than 300,000 people were displaced from their homes, and Lebanese hospitals need blood and resources. Read more about how you can contribute to disaster relief for victims here.
