George W. Bush handed something to his “partner in crime,” Michelle Obama during his father’s funeral while greeting former presidents. If it’s part of their continuing inside joke, it was most likely a mint or cough drop.
Observant viewers of Wednesday’s funeral for George H.W. Bush likely saw son George W. Bush slip Michelle Obama something before taking his seat.
The exchange is part of an inside joke between the two, who have become close friends over the years.
A similar handoff at Sen. John McCain’s funeral in September was caught on video, and the former first lady later explained what it was all about on a segment of NBC’s Today Show. George W. Bush and Obama are often seated next to each other at official functions. In that particular moment, Bush gave her an Altoid from his wife and former first lady, Laura Bush.
“He is my partner in crime at every major thing where all the formers gather,” Obama said. “So we’re together all the time, and I love him to death. He’s a wonderful man. He’s a funny man.”
