Under normal circumstances, Google would have introduced its Pixel 4A smartphone in the meantime. Last year's Pixel 3A and 3A XL have exceeded consumer expectations for a $ 400 phone – especially in terms of camera performance. The company aggressively promoted this strength by comparing its mid-range device to Apple's expensive iPhones, which (at the time) weren't comparable to pixels in low-light photography.
Selling a great camera with Google's great software for less than $ 500 turned out to be a smart recipe. It is widely believed that the Pixel 3A and 3A XL are among the most successful Google brand phones. They were a ray of hope between the sluggish sales of the Pixel 3 and more recently the Pixel 4. (Last month, The Information published a report in which Google hardware chief Rick Osterloh was not entirely satisfied with the result of the latest flagship smartphone of the Company was.)
There is a lot of driving on the Pixel 4A to promote this reputation and success. Since Google I / O 2020 was canceled due to the COVID 19 pandemic, Google remained the obvious, convenient time to announce this. A month later, today's Android 11 announcements from Google came and went without mentioning the Pixel 4A.
Recent rumors have announced a release for some time in July that would be just three months before Google's traditional hardware event in October. We do not currently live in normal times. So who knows how Google is approaching the fall cycle? However, other companies have continued to ship new products in recent months, including Apple with the second-generation iPhone SE. This and other mid-range devices like the Samsung Galaxy A51 are the biggest challenges for the Pixel 4A – and it's not even in the mix. In addition to its camera, the 4A also has strengths. The all-screen design looks much more modern than the iPhone SE's display, although it's less outstanding in the Android world.
What we know about the Pixel 4A
As always, Google did a terrible job of keeping the Pixel 4A locked up before the announcement. In the past few months, all technical data, renderings, images of Pixel 4A prototypes and camera examples have been leaked. Even the new wallpapers of the phone are already available. In April 9to5Google published a detailed overview of the hardware:
- 5.81-inch display (resolution 2340 x 1080)
- Snapdragon 730
- 64 GB or 128 GB storage
- 6 GB RAM
- 3.080mAh battery
- 12.2 megapixel rear view camera
- Same video recording functions as for Pixel 4 (maximum 4 KB at 30 frames per second)
- 8-megapixel front camera (hole cutout)
- Headphone jack
- Fingerprint reader mounted on the back
No real surprises, but it's worth nothing that Google appears to have switched to universal flash storage instead of the slower eMMC flash memory built into the Pixel 3A and 3A XL. And it's nice to see that the Pixel 4A receives the same 6 GB of RAM as the Pixel 4 to avoid multitasking frustration.
What about the Pixel 4A XL?
There were rumors that Google either canceled the larger Pixel 4A XL completely or postponed it significantly. It sounds like the phone is a goner. Aside from the larger, higher resolution screen, it would have been different from the regular model by installing a larger battery and adding a secondary rear view camera. There is a possibility that this would have been a telephoto lens like the Pixel 4, although I and many others wished Google had opted for an Ultrawide camera instead. Hopefully the Pixel 5 will do it right.
What does the Pixel 4A cost?
Google is expected to reach at least the starting point of Pixel 3A last year of $ 399. However, 9to5Google's Stephen Hall said the company could potentially go further down to as low as $ 349 to achieve this price advantage over iPhone SE and other competitors.
But the first step is actually the announcement.
