(Reuters) – Jens-Petter Hauge's late equalizer resulted in a 1-1 draw for AC Milan against 10-man Sampdoria on Saturday as Rossoneri's Serie A title hopes were dwindling another heavy blow.
A careless pass from Milan defender Theo Hernandez was fired by Fabio Quagliarella in the second half and he shot an inspired lob over goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma from a long distance.
Visitors were soon reduced to 10 men for the last half hour when Adrien Silva picked up a second yellow card for a reckless challenge.
Milan tried hard to find a way back into the game until Hauge hit the target in the 87th minute and midfielder Franck Kessie's deflected hit came back from the post in stoppage time.
"We didn't do enough, we played with little rhythm and we didn't have the right approach. It was a complicated game for us," Milan coach Stefano Pioli told Milan TV.
Milan have not won on their own since beating Crotone on February 7, a run of six games in all competitions, the worst form at home since December 2013.
One point contributes little to the dwindling title hopes of the Rossoneri in Serie A, as the second-placed team remained five points behind leaders Inter after two more games. Sampdoria remained tenth with 36 points.
Claudio Ranieri's side had better chances in the first half when Manolo Gabbiadini's curling performance and a strong header from Morten Thorsby demanded a sharp reaction from Donnarumma.
Despite having a near-strong team, Milan took the break after registering a shot on goal for the third time this season.
Hernandez's loose pass fell in Quagliarella's path in the 57th minute and the 38-year-old led for the first time to reach 10th goals of the season.
"Scoring a goal is always a great satisfaction. I am aware of my strengths and I want to seize every opportunity that presents itself. I took half a look and it wasn't easy, but it went well," Quagliarella told Sky Italia.
Silva's poorly judged slide tackle let a man down his side two minutes later, but Milan couldn't find a breakthrough until Hauge shot a shot in the far corner.
Kessie was only inches from a remarkable turn when his target was deflected off the post in the final minutes.
