Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte extended a nationwide blockade to curb the coronavirus on Friday until May 3, but said some types of stores are likely to reopen next week.
The restrictions on movement and the closure of most stores across Italy were imposed on March 9 and should expire on Monday.
"This is a difficult but necessary decision, for which I assume all political responsibility," said Conte at a press conference.
With a few exceptions to the lockdown expansion, Mr. Conte said that bookstores, stationery and shops selling children's clothing could reopen on Tuesday.
Factories closed because of the lockdown could not work again, he said, destroying hopes of the industry chiefs, who had warned of an economic catastrophe, with vulnerable wages for workers and a possible permanent loss of market share.
