After the latest Animal Crossing became a worldwide phenomenon with its compelling combination of fishing, hunting, and interior design, it was only a matter of time before a large company tried to capitalize on its success. Now Ikea Taiwan has done just that by recreating a number of pages from its iconic catalog of characters and in-game items from the Nintendo title. The results were published on the official Facebook page.
The Animal Crossing catalog is not a perfect facsimile due to the limitations of the game's interior design options. But it's a damn good attempt. I especially like how she used the game's colorful characters and matched her outfits almost exactly to Ikea's models.
Of course, shopping for furniture in Animal Crossing doesn't work quite the same as it does in Ikea. In Animal Crossing, buying furniture is a frustrating process when you keep visiting the in-game shop hoping that the items you need to complete your collection are in stock. However, shopping for furniture in Ikea is a frustrating process when one is forced to walk through the maze-like interior to find the item you need. It is crucial that there are at least meatballs.
Here you will find a selection of the pictures that Ikea Taiwan shared on its Facebook page, as well as the pages from its real catalog. When viewing them on the desktop, you can hover over them to see the difference between the two versions.
Ikea is just the latest company to choose Animal Crossing: New Horizons. According to PR Week in May, this was a "PG paradise for brands" (nausea, I know). Sure, maybe it's a bit sad to see corporate brands kidnap a simple game about the tireless harvest of an island's natural resources to repay an exorbitant mortgage you took out from capitalist overlord Tom Nook, but what else did you expect ?
