Larry Nance Jr. wants to play basketball. If only an accurate measure of his personal risk could guide his decision about when it is safe to return during the coronavirus pandemic.
Nance, who has Crohn's disease and needs treatment that significantly weakens his immune system, told ESPN on Monday that he was training in one-on-one sessions at the team facility. When workouts shift to teamwork and possibly games that count, Nance hopes the NBA will understand his condition.
"I would hope there is an understanding (from the league) if someone is not comfortable when you come back that you are getting a passport," said Nance. "Just because you may look like the image of health, some people have problems you can't see.
"We are young and you know what the players are in. You would like to believe that (the virus) is not what it could be for others. But you do not know. I am still scared and want don't get it. "
At 19-46, when the NBA stopped the games in March, the Cavaliers are far out of the playoff picture and occupy 15th place in the Eastern Conference. If the regular season continues, the Cavs will have only 17 games left. The longer the break, the less likely it is that the NBA regular season games will be included in a return-to-play plan.
Nance occasionally requires intravenous infusions of a drug that can help fight coronavirus, ESPN reported.
"I pay close attention to everything that is going on," he said. "I saw the German soccer league over the weekend and saw how the players interacted and how they still had a lot of contact. I cannot imagine that I tried to find out on one of these calls. There are so many options to spread this. "
