India, which has gained the trust of many nations around the world, including the United States, can pull global supply chains away from China and reduce its dependence on Chinese companies, Foreign Secretary Mike Pompeo said on Wednesday.
In his keynote speech at the India India Business Council (USIBC )’s annual India Ideas Summit, Pompeo said that it is important that democracies like the United States and India work together, especially as they recognize the real scope more clearly than ever before, the challenges of the Communist Party China.
"We are working closely together to ensure that the choice of the World Intellectual Property Organization is won by someone who respects property rights. This appears to be fairly easy," he said amid growing tensions between Washington and Beijing over rights of intellectual property.
India, Pompeo said, has an opportunity to pull global supply chains away from China and reduce reliance on Chinese companies in areas such as telecommunications, healthcare, and others.
"India is in this position because it has won the trust of many nations around the world, including the United States," he said.
At the same time, the leading US diplomat also underlined the need for India to promote an environment that is "more open" to more trade and investment from America.
"But as I said last year, to achieve these worthy goals, India needs to promote an environment that is more open to more trade and investment. I know this is possible because Indians and Americans share a spirit of hard work and entrepreneurship, and I & # 39; I am confident that our partnership will only get stronger, "said Pompeo.
He pointed out that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was invited to the next G7 summit to be hosted by the United States.
"We have also invited Prime Minister Modi to the next G-7 (summit) where we will advance the economic prosperity network," said Pompeo.
The G-7 is a group of countries and organizations that view the United States as a natural partner because they share values such as democracy, transparency and the rule of law.
In his speech, Pompeo praised India's recent decision to ban 59 Chinese mobile apps, including TikTok, which poses a serious security risk to the Indian people.
"We also had to work with India to advance the Blue Dot Network, an initiative to promote high quality, transparent infrastructure development," he said, adding that these efforts are crucial as free markets are the best way to get around Getting people out of poverty. India has seen this in its recent past, "he noted.
This is a particularly important truth to remember today as the private sector will be indispensable and will overcome the economic damage caused by the coronavirus pandemic in Wuhan, China, he said.
The United States, he said, wants a new era of ambition in its relations with India.
"We don't just interact on a bilateral basis. We see ourselves as great democracies, global powers and really good friends. India is one of the few trustworthy like-minded countries for whose leaders I regularly call for advice and cooperation on cross-continent issues," said Pompeo.
"I am confident that our relationship will only get stronger. Let us get out of this current challenge, which is more resilient and innovative than before. And let us use this moment to deepen the cooperation between two of the world's largest democracies," he added.
