DUBAI (Reuters) – The death toll from the coronavirus outbreak in Iran has reached 43, a health official told state television on Saturday, adding that the number of people infected across the country has reached 593.
"Unfortunately, nine people have died from the virus in the past 24 hours. The death toll is now 43. The number of newly confirmed infected cases since yesterday is 205, which corresponds to a total of 593 confirmed infected people," Kianush told Jahanpur state television.
Iran, which has the highest death toll outside of China, has ordered schools to close until Tuesday, and the government has extended university closures and a ban on concerts and sporting events by a week.
Several high-ranking officials, including a vice minister, a deputy health minister and five legislators, tested positive for the corona virus as the rapid spread of the outbreak forced the government to ask people to stay at home.
The Iranian media reported on Saturday that a legislature elected in the February 21 Iranian polls had died of the coronavirus.
The Iranian government spokesman will hold his weekly press conference online because of the outbreak, the semi-official news agency Mehr reported.
