Mindy Kaling's new Netflix comedy, I have never, will be one of the liveliest comedies of the year, not least because it's supposed to be about Kaling himself! Although the show tells a fictional story with fictional characters, Kaling was very open to the fact that the show and her characters were inspired by her own early life as an Indian-American girl who grew up in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Here's how much of Kaling's real life we can expect on the show.
In the heart of I have never Kaling's desire is to tell a story about the types of characters she would have been related to as a teenager, but that's not very often shown. "Nerds aren't just the wallflowers and the silent ones," Kaling said to one diversity Event. "We are ambitious, we sometimes have disgusting personalities, we want sex and dreams like all other children." It is an experience, she explained, with which she could identify closely, which made the creative process even more special and personal. "I was lucky enough to be able to put on a show about an Indian nerd who also behaved badly to show that because I am very familiar with it."
The show focuses on Devi, a first-generation Indian-American teenage girl who is an over-satisfied, whip-smart high school student who also happens to have a short temper that puts her in difficult situations. Canadian newcomer Maitreyi Ramakrishnan took on the role of over 15,000 applicants who auditioned after Kaling put an open casting call online. In the first trailer, Devi prays for the possibility of going to a party with alcohol and drugs (so that she can of course reject it), for a hot non-nerd friend and for better handling of body hair.
I have never debuts its first season on April 27th on Netflix and we know it will make us laugh and think!
