Italy recorded 368 new deaths from the novel corona virus, the highest increase in one day to date, and rose to 1,809, most outside China, official data showed.
The number of infections has reached 24,747, the Italian civil protection service told the media.
The northern Lombardy region around Milan remained the European epicenter of the pandemic, officially reporting 1,218 deaths, or 67 percent of the Italian total.
But on Sunday, the number of deaths in the southeastern region of Puglia around the city of Bari also doubled from eight to 16.
In the Lazio region, which also includes the Italian capital Rome, 16 deaths were officially recorded – compared to 13 on Saturday – and 436 infections.
