According to a press release from NanoMalaysia Berhad (NMB), one of its technology partners, Enhance Track Sdn Bhd has successfully completed a working prototype of a high frequency wireless charger (RF) for cell phones known as Malaysian Energy Transmission Technology (METT).
NMB is a business unit of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) charged with the commercialization and industrialization of nanotechnology, while Enhance Track Sdn Bhd provides equipment and manufacturing services worldwide.
METT enables contactless, non-inductive remote charging over a range of a few meters and can supply 5 V-based mobile devices with power. This makes METT the first of its kind in Malaysia, the statement said.
Simply put, there is no more messy power cords and battery changes, and with this system you can go to any zone with WiFi and the phone will automatically charge.
Benedict Foo, CEO of Enhance Track Sdn Bhd, described the usefulness of the technology in the current context.
"Everyone has a mobile phone these days, and whether for business or pleasure, they need an efficient way to charge their devices without being tied to a wall."
He added, "Now there is a system in which you can charge real wireless cell phones that give you sheer mobility and the market demand has been incredible."
An important milestone in the commercialization of nanotechnology
The breakthrough technology behind METT was developed as part of NMB's National Graph Action Plan (NGAP), which focuses on developing graph-based technologies in collaboration with Malaysian industries and universities.
METT marks an important milestone in the commercialization of nanotechnology, especially after the CEO of NMB, Dr. Rezal Khairi Ahmad, at MyNano 2019 shared that the focus of NGAP 2019 according to IR4.0 would be on a wireless charging system and radio frequency identification (RFID).
In the press release, he said, “NanoMalaysia identified a remote wireless charger as one of the few short-term game changers. Using our unique venture builder model, the technology was jointly developed with Enhance Track through product development and funding for scale-up projects. "
"The product is launched on the basis of an intelligent partnership in conjunction with commercial providers."
METT is currently being finally optimized and improved before it is expected to hit the market in mid-2021.
In addition to revolutionizing the market, sales of almost RM 1.9 billion and the creation of up to 2,800 jobs are forecast.
All of NMB's efforts are aimed at highlighting the importance of the role nanotechnology must play in not only providing solutions to everyday problems, but also stimulating and driving the economy.
Some other commercialization projects that NMB has participated in include a hydrogen-powered drone known as a High Endurance Fuel Cell Powered UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) and a hydrogen-paired hybrid energy storage system (H2SS) that is currently powered by drones and a hydrogen-pair electric racing car ( HyPER).
