Blurb from the author: Even before the pandemic, the concept of online learning was on the rise, and platform by platform emerged. They were offered in the form of recorded courses, revision materials, or sometimes a combination of both. However, a Malaysian startup wants to take the concept of online learning to a higher level.
Online classes already have some advantages over offline classes. First, teachers can save time by not having to repeat classes for different students, they can earn additional income, and the range of their classes extends far beyond a small group of students.
Parents do not have to worry about the time and cost of sending their children to teaching centers, especially if they are enrolled in multiple classes at different centers.
Students can now access the services of world-class teachers and tutors across Malaysia as they are no longer tied to the nearest classroom center to save time and money.
No wonder that online learning platforms are booming and the pandemic has helped them further. One that was recently launched in May 2020 is MyTuition, which was founded by Eddie Lim.
What distinguishes it from existing platforms is the goal of transferring the entire learning experience in the physical classroom to the virtual space by integrating all the necessary functions for beneficial teaching and learning on a single platform.
400 schools and 15 years of experience behind it
The MyTuition model advocates livestream classes instead of the usual recorded classes. In this way, lessons can be made more interactive because students can chat with teachers and even give questions and answers throughout the class.
If the students miss the live streams, the recordings will be available on MyTuition for the next 7 days.
To ensure the quality of teaching, Eddie also assembled a team of renowned and award-winning teachers from the private and government sectors to offer their services on the platform.

Here he used his network of over 400 schools in Malaysia, which he had built up after 15 years in the education industry, to his advantage.
He owns a sister company called Youth World Development Sdn Bhd, which specializes in organizing PT3 and SPM seminars nationwide.
They had already started experimenting with online learning rooms in 2013 by recording their live seminars and making them available on their website. Interested students can then purchase a user ID to access it.
"Since then, we've seen a gradual increase in sales for our online seminars. This was the first indication that there was a demand for online courses," Eddie told Vulcan Post.
They then conducted surveys after their seminars to ask students if they were interested in continuing to learn from seminar teachers (since these were usually only one-day events), if there was a way to do so.
Almost 50% of their seminar students responded positively, and that was enough for Eddie and his team to start basing on MyTuition in early 2019.
A learning process for teachers too
While MyTuition brings together great teachers, there is still a review process to make sure that their teachers are actually competent enough to teach online.
You need to complete a training course to educate yourself and use the technology behind the MyTuition platform to create and manage courses, teach, and track student performance and assignments.
The way in which classes are offered online also varies. Therefore, teachers are trained in the various ways in which students can take part in live online classes.
Once they are deemed suitable for the platform, they are free to choose the timing, capacity and fee of their classes.
"In the first phase of our launch, where classes begin in June, we will focus on the national secondary school curriculum, high school, and IGCSE," said Eddie.
“So it will include subjects like Bahasa Melayu, English, math, science, Sejarah, physics, chemistry, biology, accounting, commerce, etc. In our second phase, we will also expand to primary and 6th grade curriculum. ”

All classes currently listed on the platform are free for the entire month of June and are open to students, other teachers and even parents. There is also no limit to the number of subject classes for which you can register and participate for this month.
“We currently have Zoom and Google Meet integrated into our Learning Management System (LMS). Therefore, teachers can use both applications when it comes to live streaming with students, ”said Eddie.
“However, we are currently developing our own app. As soon as this is finished, our own livestream server will also be integrated. "
MyTuition is looking forward to working with publishers to expand their content for students, and they also see a gap in integrating AI into the platform to help students with their studies and other educational decisions.
"At the moment, however, we are focusing on the core aspects of the platform, which will initially improve the user experience and qualifications of our teachers on their path to becoming digital teachers," Eddie concluded.
Bottom line: I don't like looking at the memories of my school days. The quality of my teachers was below average, travel time and costs were annoying, and at the end of the day I didn't feel that my lessons helped me a lot, especially with subjects that I really struggled with. I think online lessons from home would have been preferable instead as I have had to juggle school and homework regularly.
