The French police shot a man of Afghan origin who was armed with a knife and threatened them in the Paris suburbs on Wednesday, the prosecutors and police said.
The police patrolling on bicycles noticed the man armed with a long knife in La Courneuve in north-east Paris, the police said in a statement.
The man threatened the police and then went up to them, it said. The police then shot him several times, she added.
Prosecutors said the man was "apparently born in Afghanistan".
"No theory is ruled out, but it appears that no comments of a terrorist nature have been made," said another police source.
A Sudanese man went on a killing spree in the southeast of the country on April 4 and killed two people. Since then, he has been charged with terrorist offenses.
France has been on alert since a wave of fatal bombings and jihadist shootings in Paris in 2015.
