Today MBO Cinemas published an unprecedented post on its Facebook page – a video message.
It held hearty news from its new CEO, Cheah Chun Wai.
He has been with MBO since 2013 and started as Director of Sales Marketing. In January 2018, he rose the ladder to the COO position. He was promoted to CEO this October.
With this story between him and the company, the content of the video felt rougher and more real than ever.
Another possible 6-12 months of fighting
In the video, he expressed how much they missed their fans and that they were looking forward to seeing everyone again soon.
He also introduced himself as the new CEO of MBO, but stated that he did not want to be congratulated just yet.
Rather, he wants everyone to wish him and his team good luck during these times.
Everyone now knows how badly the cinema industry has been hit by the pandemic, and our local chains have tried various tactics to prevail.
Chun Wai said the 2020 Chinese New Year fighting had started and the MBO admission rate had dropped to around 10-15% in September 2020.
"If we used to have 50 customers, we now only have 2 to 3 customers per session," he said of her dire situation.
Since then, they have tried their best to cut costs while waiting for the content to get back on screen. However, in the current situation, Chun Wai shared that they may have to wait another 6 to 12 months.
That's a long time for a company that already has so many problems.
Fans needed for #StayStrongMBOCinemas
As you may have heard only a week or two ago, there was news that MBO has closed its doors for good.
The Edge Markets reported a notice of its intention to conduct the liquidation process for MBO Cinemas officially known as MCAT Box Office Sdn Bhd.
However, MBO remains determined to save itself and stay longer.
Chun Wai shared in the video that they would stay strong and to do that they needed the help of their fans for their #StayStrongMBOCinemas campaign.
They have thousands of limited edition items in stock, which is slow moving due to a lack of approvals.
To facilitate sales, MBO will open table sales in its cinema foyer in compliance with the SOPs of October 30, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at all MBO locations except:
- Room U8,
- Brem Mall,
- and Kota Tinggi.
1 piece can be bought at RM15 while 4 pieces can be bought at RM50.
Chun Wai asked fans to come and help them if they wanted to return to MBO one day, adding, "Kasi sapu licin!"
Aside from the physical sales, MBO is also working to list their merchandise on their official Shopee account here and will update fans once everything is ready.
