Mophie is one of the oldest names in the industry when it comes to smartphone batteries, but the latest version gives the approach a new twist. Instead of a battery compartment that can only be used with a single phone, the new Juice Pack Connect uses a modular system to attach a battery to the back of your phone where it can be charged wirelessly.
It is a creative solution that solves many problems with both bespoke battery cases and more modern Qi battery packs. The Juice Pack Connect basically works with any phone that supports wireless charging, not just a single device. Thanks to the clip mechanism, Qi charging can also be used on the go without resorting to solutions like a strange suction cup array to hold the charger and phone together.
In addition, the Mophie system has a modular structure. If your detachable battery is empty, you can simply put on another Mophie backpack and continue charging. There's an opportunity for future expansion here too: the company already has a phone grip stand that can be attached to the main anchor point when you're not charging, and it's easy to imagine that other products could be released that use the setup, too.
The battery itself has a 5,000 mAh battery and offers both a USB-C port and Qi support. Both can be used either to charge the Juice Pack Connect or to charge a second device. However, Mophie doesn't say what kind of performance the Juice Pack Connect offers in terms of charging speed.
The other big issue with the Juice Pack Connect is the $ 79.95 price tag – a steep price tag for a 20,000 mAh USB-C battery, much less a 5,000 mAh one.
