The main factors that determine the suitability of pants for men are usually price, comfort, maintenance, and design. Bottoms Lab, a men's-centric apparel brand first launched in Melbourne, has ambitiously designed a product that wants to tick all of the above boxes.
Bottoms Lab's founders are Malaysian, and while their bottoms were originally intended for the notoriously spirited Melbourne weather, they found that their pants would also suit Malaysian weather, which fluctuates between rainy and sunny skies.
When it comes to aesthetics, most pants with gathered "stretchy" waistbands look more casual and are usually not fashionable. Bottoms Lab hopes to solve this problem with its more modern design that maintains the elasticity of stretchy long pants but is suitable for elegant casual or semi-formal occasions.
The brand's flagship collection, the Momentum range (trousers and shorts) is a pair of pants that resembles your usual fitted chinos. But unlike traditional chinos, the momentums are done with you breathable and stretchable fabric, with a sleek design that should easily cross the line between casual and more formal attitudes.

To make sure the pants work well for those with an active lifestyle, they sent a few pairs of their friends to test them out under various activities like basketball, skateboarding, and more.
Testing the floors on my floor
After reading their claims, we literally had to walk a mile in their pants.
As someone who's on the bigger side, finding the right pair of pants that combines comfort and style has always been a problem. In my case, non-stretchable ones usually leave an imprint around my waist after being worn for a full day, especially when I have heavy meals.
On the other hand, my colleague Goh, the father of two children, often has difficulty looking for casual trousers that require less maintenance and are more durable.
So I got a pair of Momentum shorts in XL and Goh got the Momentum Pants in S.
Although the shorts fit me well, they were a little too short for my taste (the inseam is 7.6 inches for XL) as someone firmly believes that shorts must reach my knees on me. After all, my pale legs haven't seen the light of day for a few months.
Pro tip: If you prefer longer shorts, you can opt for the Ease Lounge Shorts instead, which are available in a 9-inch inseam variant. Use voucher code VPXBL10 for a discount of RM10 on your first purchase.
My pale legs haven't seen the sun in a long time. The XXL shorts (in black) are a little longer than the XL shorts.
I wore the shorts for a full home work through the recent blistering weather, and it was pretty comfortable Experience. I felt overly sweaty throughout the working day and with that stretchy Material was also easy to move around in.
The big difference is that they look a lot more presentable than my worn, faded pants that my mom usually complains about – I can get up during a Zoom video meeting without being ashamed.
The front pocket of the pants fits easily in my cell phone and even in a long wallet. For those who would appreciate secret pockets, they have a small one in front.
Goh wears the Momentum Pants
Like most working from home with kids, Goh constantly has to juggle between his parental responsibilities and his job. His 2 active boys require him to be quick on his feet and this is where the stretch helps and he wouldn't look sloppy taking in visitors or running errands.
He mentioned that the pants were Light, which he sees as an advantage when packing for the family as the pants don't add much weight.
He was impressed with that wrinkle free Feature of the pants, minimal ironing is required, which is a plus for a busy parent.
Finding the right fit through trial and error
We are not alone in our positive experience with the products. When the brand launched in Malaysia in early 2020, the team was able to build an ever-returning customer base of those who like quality bottoms at an affordable price.
In developing the pants, the team went through more than 100 samples and 6 months of research and development to perfect the materials and fit of the final product. They washed the prototypes several times to make sure they wouldn't shrink afterwards.

Bottoms Lab succeeded in just one year Increase your sales by 160%. In terms of profit, the team shared the breakdown of the cost and profit of their products.
For example, with their Momentum Shorts (RM89), 70% of that retail price goes into product and fulfillment (RM62.30), while 20% goes into marketing and cure (RM17.80) and 10% (RM8). 90) is their gain.
As for Bottoms Lab next, the team said they are actively looking for local brands to work with and that working together will be a chance for both parties to showcase their respective strengths.
For future materials, the team would like to add denim to its product line. However, combining denim and comfort is not an easy task and requires additional research and testing.
Could there be any other stretchy and comfortable clothing from Bottoms Lab than the men's pants? Hopefully, if they are able to complete a thorough R&D process for it.
