During the MCO, the immersive entertainment center Breakout had to keep its doors shut as a non-essential service. As a company that relied on personal experience, this meant practically no sales for the company.
Nevertheless, the parent company Superdough Sdn Bhd had the idea to sell discounted 1-year tickets for Breakout and its sister brand Hauntu to keep them going.
Most recently, they decided to launch a new product called The Enigma Gift Box under Breakout to commemorate their sixth birthday.
Inspired by the puzzles and puzzles you'd find in a breakout game, this gift embodies all of this and more in a box.
It is intended as a gift from you to a loved one, be it a partner or family member, and can be given regardless of the occasion.
If the recipient receives the box, he will only know your identity when he has solved all the puzzles. The puzzles in the box have been personalized to reflect your special moments or dates with the recipient. These are the clues for their solution.
Superdough is known for its ability to create personalized experiences, especially for Hauntu, where your style of play determines the end you get. In a way, they bring this personalization from the rooms into these boxes.
Once the puzzles have been solved, the recipient can turn the box into a time capsule with instructions detailing what objects can be stored in it.

In my personal experience, I have never seen such a gift. So it's no wonder that within 30 days of its launch, all 30 units of The Enigma's first batch were sold out.
There is more to come
For those of you grieving for a missed opportunity, Breakout co-founder Ka-Wai told Vulcan Post that there will be a 100 unit replenishment for a second batch. If they see an increase in customer requests for a Bahasa Melayu version, they can take care of them too.
Each box costs RM80 and production is complete after purchase. Customers who make a purchase receive an automated email that routes them to a Google form that they need to fill out.
Answer as best you can as they are used by the breakout team to customize the puzzle.
"For example, one of the questions we ask is:" Give us the memorable date between you and the recipient and their answer in a four-digit date or year, "Ka-Wai said.
They will also ask the customer to record a video message for the recipient to reveal the sender's identity. However, this can only be displayed after completing the puzzle.
The adjustment of the Enigma gift box can take between 2 and 5 days. The team confirms the delivery date and other special requests to the customer.

While they have successfully sold 30 units so far, Ka-Wai said it is not enough to cover their survival costs.
"I think if we can sell up to 120 units a month, we can cover part of the cost like employee wages."
Break out of the standard
While working on other The Enigma gift boxes, Ka-Wai also gave us a little taste of something else that is currently being completed.
"Most of the online escape rooms we've tried and seen overseas require players to solve puzzles on a static video screen by instructing a game master."
“In the video, players will ask the game master to solve puzzles like opening a lock or solving puzzles on a shared screen using a static image. This is not what we envision digitizing escape rooms at the price customers will pay, ”he added.
For Breakout, whose online game is also run via video conferencing software, they differentiate themselves by including an NPC (non-playable character or actor) in the game. The scenario may include saving this NPC for a proper escape.
They hope to develop an online experience where interactivity, storylines and decision making play a big role in the game, rather than just solving puzzles.
They also develop various online products to find their way around the current situation and keep their players busy.
Accordingly, they will launch a mini-Hari Raya challenge called Puzzle Raya so people can play puzzles for free during the season. The successful challenger gets free entry to a breakout outlet. This price is valid for 1 year.
