(Bloomberg) – Malaysia's new prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin is committed to fighting corruption and strengthening governance. He was not a traitor, but had saved the country from political unrest.
"I know there are those who are angry with me," he said in his first television address to the nation last night as Prime Minister. “As expected, there are parties that have called me a traitor. Listen carefully, I'm not a traitor. "
The 72-year-old Muhyiddin was named Prime Minister by the country's monarch after a week-long battle for power after Mahathir Mohamad suddenly quarreled in his former coalition. The new government alliance consists of defectors like Muhyiddin, who joined the Barisan Nasional coalition, which lost power in 2018 after ruling the country for six decades.
Mahathir said he felt "cheated" by Muhyiddin, until recently his right-wing man, and was looking for an urgent vote of confidence in Parliament to show that he had the numbers to form a government. Political uncertainty surrounding a global stock sell-off led Malaysian stocks to drop to an eight-year low on Monday.
"I don't long for the post of prime minister," said Muhyiddin. "I only stepped forward to save the situation when both prime ministerial candidates did not get a majority stake," he said, referring to Mahathir and Anwar Ibrahim who were in the race.
Muhyiddin also promised to continue the previous government's Shared Prosperity Vision 2030 in order to promote fair development and raise living standards.
"First of all, I promise to appoint cabinet ministers among those who are clean, honest, and capable," he said. "My government will also prioritize efforts to improve integrity and good governance."
