Bjak.my (Bjak) wants to help you find the best car insurance at the best price you are willing to pay.
Launched in 2019, they've joined the car comparison website scene, which already has competitions like MyEG and AutoRoadTax (linked to MyEG).
All three locations can handle everything from car insurance to road tax for you while you stay in control of your decisions.
One way that sets Bjak apart is that they can get you a quote in less than 3 minutes.
I also noticed Bjak in another way: It was the only place of the three that could see my month-long car in the system.
MyEG's apology to me when I tried to register on the website
I tried adding my car's registration number, IC and zip code to MyEG and AutoRoadTax, but an error came up stating that my new car could not be found in the system.
What I can get from this is that Bjak seems to have a more up-to-date database and system that reflects this, which makes it automatically preferable.
Get an offer
As a newbie to all of the legal requirements for owning a car, I decided to see how easy Bjak would be to use.
Disclaimer: I did not use the service to buy my car insurance and car tax. As a first-time car buyer, my dealer had already done all of this for me. But I wanted to be prepared to know what my options are and how low I can get these quotes for future reference, so I gave Bjak a chance.
The first step, of course, is to fill in the details of your vehicle registration number and IC, vehicle type and zip code.
All of these details are required in order to obtain and verify your vehicle information with JPJ and to determine if there is No Claims Discount (NCD) information. These apply to every other comparison page for motor insurance.
Dictionary time: A no-claims discount means a reduction in the cost of your car insurance if you don't make a claim. Typically, you get a year with no entitlement discount for every year of driving without entitlement. So if you don't make a claim for five years, you won't get a claim discount on the basic cost of your car insurance for five years.
Bjak will then send you an email (or WhatsApp message depending on which contact method you have chosen) with a specified amount due for your insurance and road tax.
Email of my first proposed offer
As with a human agent, once you are happy with their proposal all you have to do is hit "Proceed to Payment" and they will deliver your road tax to your address within 2 working days.
But I wasn't happy with the offer as they simply suggested something they believed would meet my needs based on the information they could find about my car ownership at JPJ.
Adjust and compare
I wanted more customizations, so I kept scrolling down and clicking the link to do just that.
The next step led me to change my insurance type and amount. I had the option of using the agreed value or choosing between the following options:
- Comprehensive (first party),
- Third party, fire and theft (also known as second party),
- Third page.
Dictionary time: The sum insured is the maximum amount that a car insurer pays out as part of your car insurance over a specified period, which for car insurance is almost always one year. The sum insured is reduced by 10% per year if the car depreciates or the market price of the car.
I found it very helpful how they tell you exactly what each cover type means
They also tell you how much the current market value for your car is under the slider, which I found very helpful.
You can then select an insurer from whom you would like to request a quote. Their list of companies includes:
- Allianz General Insurance Company (Malaysia) Berhad,
- AXA Affin General Insurance Berhad,
- Etiqa General Takaful Berhad,
- Zurich General Takaful Malaysia Berhad,
- Syarikat Takaful Malaysia Am Berhad,
- RHB insurance Berhad,
- Pacific & Orient Insurance Co. Bhd,
- Freedom Insurance Berhad,
- General Insurance Berhad (Kurnia).
Once that's done, they'll send you another email with their recommendation for the lowest price that fits your selection.
Still not entirely satisfied, I went in again to compare.
Eventually, they took me to where I could properly compare what each insurer covered and for how much. Personally, I wish I had seen this much earlier as it would have saved me more time.
After reading through all of the proposed plans, I settled on what I thought was the best coverage.
A drop down menu gave me the option to choose some add-ons such as B. Windshield Cover, Unlimited Towing, Simple Claims, and Road Tax.
The final step was to enter my address and check the box that says all my information is correct and will be sent to JPJ.
A final quote was displayed at the bottom of the site's page. As soon as I have paid, my insurance and road tax will be sent to me.
My last quote on the page
Did it really take you 3 minutes?
If you're not as fussy or curious as I am about seeing all the possible options, this is it.
Filling out your details and the first quote they suggested and then paying would be literally that quick, especially since their responses didn't take long.
If you were happy with your first choice and want to renew the same exact insurance plan for the next year, that would be quick too, as you would no longer spend time making comparisons.
What bothered me most about the whole process was the back and forth between my emails and Bjak's website that went on every time I completed every small step.
If I can see my listing on the website itself, I can track changes on the spot, similar to when you apply a discount code in Shopee, you can see the price drop in real time.
This would also make the user experience more seamless as I no longer have to rely on the website to read my emails and messages.
So if I came back to it, I'd forget what I was doing in the first place.
While this is likely done to keep your offering and data private, I wish the user experience was more seamless and I didn't have to leave the site every time.
Other than that, I like how quick and informative the whole process was. Each step included explanations of your choices.
It was very user friendly and something I can appreciate as it mimics the experience I would have with a personal agent too.
Before doing your renewals right away with Bjak, however, it is still a smart consumer practice to do your own comparisons on the other websites as well.
