After months of teasers and leaks, OnePlus is now launching OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro. Both run on Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 865 chipset, but it's the larger OnePlus 8 Pro that comes with improvements for the large display and camera. OnePlus installed a 90 Hz display in the OnePlus 7 Pro last year, which will rise to 120 Hz in 2020.
It's a leap that equates it to the latest Samsung Galaxy S20. OnePlus uses a 6.78-inch QHD + display on the OnePlus 8 Pro, and the 120 Hz display helps with smoother animation, scrolling, and general navigation in Android. OnePlus even added sensors on the front and back of the display to improve automatic brightness.
The other major upgrade this year is the new quad camera system. In addition to a 48-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens, a telephoto lens and a color filter camera, OnePlus uses a 48-megapixel main camera. The ultra wide angle lens has a 120 degree angle and the telephoto lens supports 3x hybrid and 30x digital zoom.
If you are wondering what the new color filter camera can do, it supports light effects and filters for photography. OnePlus also claims to have improved the night photos, and the company even compared a photo of an iPhone 11 Pro with the new OnePlus 8 Pro at its online event today.
The camera and screen could be the big improvements, but OnePlus has also improved the internals. Inside there is up to 12 GB LPDDR5 RAM, up to 256 GB UFS 3.0 storage and Wi-Fi 6 support. OnePlus also includes protection class IP68 for the OnePlus 8 Pro, which means it should be dustproof and be immersed in up to 1.5 meters of water for up to 30 minutes.
OnePlus finally supports wireless charging with 30 W "Warp Charge", which supplies 50 percent of the battery in just 30 minutes. The OnePlus 8 Pro contains a 4,510 mAh battery. With normal charging, the battery is brought to 60 percent in 30 minutes.
In addition to the hardware, OnePlus also improves the OxygenOS Android implementation on the OnePlus 8 Pro. OnePlus claims that there are 280 "new optimizations" that should make the Android experience more fluid on the 120 Hz display. There's also a new dark theme and dynamic background images that change with the weather.
While OnePlus wants to focus on its flagship OnePlus 8 Pro, the smaller OnePlus 8 is a more compact flagship for those who want a smaller phone. The regular OnePlus 8 has a 6.55-inch display (20: 9 aspect ratio), and OnePlus has designed the handset to be light at 180 grams.
Both OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro will be available in black, blue and a new green color option. There is even a “Interstellar Glow” color option for the OnePlus 8, in which the color on the back is mixed in a special film. It sounds and looks very similar to the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 color option "Aura Glow".
