Father's Day is June 20th and Oprah honors black fathers.
Tonight (June 15), OWN will air Honoring Our Kings, Celebrating Black Fatherhood, hosted by Winfrey and Emmy winner Sterling K. Brown at 9 p.m. ET.
Winfrey told PEOPLE that the show was inspired by her relationship with her father Vernon Winfrey, 87.
"I had a father who took responsibility for me even though he knew I could have been someone else's child," said Oprah Winfrey.
She continued, “I wanted to turn the tables on this tale of black fathers who are not present in their children's lives. I remember the very first time I did a show about parenting, about single parents. And my way of showing or enlarging the screen at the time was to include a black dad in this group of parents but not make a big deal of it. We have a Latina parent and we have a black parent and we have a gay parent. And I remember one woman standing up and later saying that she had never seen a black father read to his children. It wasn't a picture anyone had seen on screen. And so many of the white people who watched the show said, & # 39; That's a foreign word to me. & # 39; "

Winfrey added, “It has broken away from who we are as a society and as a world. The images in the evening news or images in films, gangsters, stories that show absent fathers or focus on men who are in jail, away from their children and not caring for their children, you heard that, but that is not what we know and feel. "
The special also includes commentary from Dwyane Wade, John Legend, and D.L. Hughley.
