The death toll in China from the coronavirus epidemic rose to over 2,400 on Sunday after another 96 people died in Hubei Province, the severely affected epicenter of the outbreak.
The vast majority of deaths occurred in the provincial capital, Wuhan, where the virus first appeared in December, according to the Hubei Health Commission's daily update.
The province also reported 630 new confirmed cases, increasing the total number in China to around 77,000.
The corona virus has spread to more than 25 countries and is increasingly raising the alarm due to new outbreaks in Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
China has caused confusion over its numbers through repeated changes in its counting methods, which could further complicate efforts to track the contagion.
