According to media reports, a Pakistani International Airlines (PIA) passenger plane crashed near the Jinnah International Airport on Friday before landing.
Geo News reported that it was not immediately known how many passengers were on the plane.
Flight PK-303 from Lahore was about to land in Karachi when it crashed near the Model Colony in Malir just a minute before it landed at Jinnah Garden. A rescue operation is underway.
The crash comes as Pakistanis across the country prepare to celebrate the end of Ramadan and the start of the Muslim holiday Eid al-Fitr. Many travel back to their homes in cities and villages.

The plane crashed in an apparently densely populated residential area – Jinnah Garden near the Model Colony in Malir – just before Karachi Airport.
Civil aviation agency sources said that communication with the aircraft was interrupted one minute before landing. Several houses were damaged in the area where the plane crashed.
The Pakistani army said its rapid reaction force and paramilitary forces had reached the site for aid and rescue efforts alongside the civil administration.
"The plane crashed in Karachi. We are trying to confirm the number of passengers, but initially there are 99 passengers and eight crew members," said Abdul Sattar Khokhar, spokesman for the Pakistani Aviation Authority, adding that the flight is from Lahore .
