US President Donald Trump said Tuesday that senior health official Anthony Fauci would appear next week before a panel in the Republican-controlled U.S. Senate that would check the country's coronavirus response but couldn't testify to the Democratically-run House of Representatives.
Trump spoke to reporters in the White House and defended his decision to prevent the country's best infectious disease expert from appearing outside the house. He said he was founded by Democrats who hate him and want to win the White House back in the November presidential election.
Fauci, who heads the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and is part of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, is expected to appear before the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee with other leading U.S. health officials on May 12 .
"The house is an institution. The house is a group of Trump haters. They have included every Trump hater on the committee," said the Republican President.
"The house they should be ashamed of, and frankly, the Democrats should be ashamed of themselves because they don't want us to succeed. They want us to fail so that they can win an election that they won't win . " added Trump, who is aiming for re-election in November.
A home remedies subcommittee overseeing health programs had asked Fauci for testimony for a hearing on May 6, but the White House said last week that his appearance was "counterproductive."
Stephen Hahn, Commissioner for Food and Drug Administration, Robert Redfield, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Brett Giroir, Deputy Secretary for Health and Human Services, are expected to appear before the Senate hearing next week . School, "said the committee.
