AFP said that thousands of social media accounts linked to Russia have made coordinated efforts to raise the alarm about the new corona virus, disrupting global efforts to fight the epidemic.
The disinformation campaign promotes unsubstantiated conspiracy theories that the United States is behind the COVID 19 outbreak to damage the United States' image through the takeover of international health problems.
Fake personas are used on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to drive Russian conversation and conspiracies, including an indication that the CIA is behind the virus that has killed more than 2,300 people, mostly in China.
"Russia's intention is to sow discord and to undermine US institutions and alliances from within, including through covert and enforced campaigns against malicious influence," said Philip Reeker, Acting Deputy Secretary of State for Europe and Eurasia.
"By spreading disinformation about the corona virus, malicious Russian actors are again choosing to compromise public safety by distracting from the global health response," he said.
