MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russian lawmakers passed a law that provides prison sentences of up to seven years for people who violate the quarantine rules, as the number of coronavirus cases increased by a record daily on Tuesday.
Russia's official number rose to 2,337 cases of coronavirus, a day after more than a dozen Russian regions ordered residents to stay at home. Moscow, the worst affected area, announced a partial closure on Sunday.
According to authorities, 17 people have died with the virus across Russia so far.
Legislature in the State Duma, the lower house of parliament, supported prison terms of up to seven years and fines of up to 2 million rubles ($ 25,500) for anyone who violates the quarantine rules if it results in the death of people.
They also voted to empower the government to declare a national coronavirus emergency, if necessary.
Both laws must be supported by the Upper House of Parliament and signed before President Vladimir Putin enters into force.
Some doctors have expressed skepticism about the accuracy of the Russian coronavirus numbers, saying that the tests are incomplete and qualitative, which the authorities deny.
