SAN SALVADOR (Reuters) – At least 300 people detained in two centers set up by the Salvadoran government to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus protested Monday demanded the release and results of their tests.
El Salvador detains people accused of violating the quarantine ordered by President Nayib Bukele in March, although the Supreme Court has since instructed him not to arrest them.
People at a sports center in the capital, San Salvador, said they had been in quarantine for more than 40 days; They also said they had been tested but had not received the results.
The Salvadoran government did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
Pablo Perez, a 52-year-old farmer who said he was detained for walking on the street, said the people in the center were in good health. He added that people there were regularly examined by doctors.
Meanwhile, another group of people in a center set up in a parking lot of a Baptist church in the capital went to the windows and terraces to denounce overcrowding, inadequate conditions, and lack of test results.
The riot police guarded the protests, Reuters witnesses said.
Last week, right-wing groups convicted Bukele after posting stunning photos of hundreds of gang members detained in their underwear stripped and squeezed into formation as part of a punishment for an outbreak of violence.
El Salvador, which has reported 13 deaths and 555 confirmed cases, has 91 security centers. According to official information, 3,964 people are quarantined there.
