It has never been so necessary to help the Americans get their wink in the face of what the country is facing what some health experts have called the sleep epidemic and Snoop Doggs Cannabis-focused company Casa Verde Capital wants to help.
The company is investing $ 9.5 million in a company called Proper, which uses a combination of sleep coaching and nutritional supplements to bring a “holistic” sleep health solution to the market.
Proper estimates that a third of adults in the United States do not get enough sleep, and the company's managing director, Nancy Ramamurthi, says the COVID-19 epidemic only made the problem worse.
"Proper aims to solve what the CDC identified as a public health crisis – inadequate sleep – with a truly more holistic and personal solution," said Ramamurthi, Proper founder and CEO, in a statement. “Proper has combined the best of natural, safe and evidence-based sleep supplements with expert behavior coaching, to which consumers traditionally had no access. Thanks to the increasing popularity of telemedicine, sleep coaching can now be offered online. "
According to the company, Proper's sleep coaching services are offered by state-certified health and wellness coaches under the guidance of a clinical psychologist and specialist in behavioral sleep medicine.
Ramamurthi said clinical validation is a key part of the company's business. In fact, the company is currently going through a clinical trial to prove its effectiveness. This is an additional step that the company does not have to take, as all dietary supplements have been studied with clinical studies that support the use of the ingredients as treatments for sleep therapy. "This is because they have been used for thousands of years," said Ramamurthi.
Proper has been incubated in the Consumer Health Venture Studio Redesign Health and will use the new investor capital led by Snoop Doggs Casa Verde to intensify its sales and marketing efforts and continue its research and development activities.
While sleeping pills may seem like a strange market to a cannabis-focused investment company, Karan Wadhera, partner of Casa Verde, says this is an extremely strategic investment for the company.
"(Cannabis) is also an input and its use case will go beyond people's stigmatic attitudes towards cannabis, ”said Wadhera. "At its core, (Proper) is a company that helps us fight this sleep epidemic. We believe that CBD and cannabis in general can play a big role in doing this in ways that traditional products couldn't."
So the investment in Proper points to a maturation of the cannabis industry as investors look at the different chemical components of the cannabis plant and try to filter out a wider range of health and wellness applications. “We are starting to change our attitude to business. It doesn't have to be a central, specific cannabis product, ”said Wadhera.

Ramamurthi says her company will later study uses for cannabinoids in its supplements. "As we continue our product development process, we look at CBD, among other things, ”she said. "CBD is one of the most effective ingredients for reducing stress and anxiety. Stress and anxiety are one of the main reasons why people cannot fall asleep."
Proper's studies are supported by a scientific advisory board, Dr. Adam Perlman, Director of Integrative Health and Wellbeing at the Mayo Clinic, and Dr. Allison Siebern, a clinical psychologist and board certified sleep doctor at VA Medical, belong to the North Carolina center.
There is a reason why sleep is so poorly understood and ignored as a health problem in America. Around 90% of general practitioners rate their understanding of the effects of sleep on the body as "bad to fair", and according to Proper, there is only one sleep specialist certified by the board in 43,000 Americans.
Customers signing up for the Proper service can choose from five sleep formulations available for $ 39.99 a bottle or for a 10% discount subscription. New users also get a free 30-minute consultation with a suitable sleep coach, the company said.
The five versions of Proper's sleep products include GABA core sleep product, valerian root extract, Rafuma leaf extract, and Ashwagandha root and leaf extract. a sleep and recovery product that contains melatonin; a soothing pill with L-theanine added to the core sleep product; a clarity product that contains concentrated grape extracts; and finally an immunity product with the addition of zinc, vitamin C, B6 and D.
