Instant messaging service telegram has amassed 400 million active users per month, compared to 300 million active users reported by the SEC's seven-year-old service last October.
The service – founded by Pavel Durov, who also created the Russian social networking site VK – said today that it adds about 1.5 million users a day and is the most downloaded social media app in over 20 countries.
Telegram said today that it is working to provide its users with a secure video call feature this year to respond to the growing popularity of zoom and houseparty. Headquartered in London and Dubai, the company didn't talk about the future of its Gram cryptocurrency wallet and the TON blockchain it unveiled in 2018, but hired them earlier this year.
"As the gap in popularity between Telegram and its older competitors narrows, we find this original assumption increasingly valid," the company said in a blog post.
Telegram competes with dozens of instant messaging services, including WhatsApp That has amassed over 2 billion users worldwide. Telegram often sees an increase in its user base when a Facebook-owned service fails. Durov is one of the loudest critics of WhatsApp.
Today's telegram revealed a sticker directory that lists over 20,000 stickers and contained a handful of improvements, such as a new app menu for Android . The company also announced that it is creating a database of student education tests and plans to distribute 400,000 euros to developers for the creation of these tests.
theinformationsuperhighway learned last week that the service had reached the 400 million user milestone, but at that point, Telegram was not responding to a request for comment.
